Making SQL Backup For You On Demand

    May 5, 2022 @ 4:30 - 6:00 Online Talk and Chat

When moving away from proprietary backup software (waves to Backup Exec) and installing systems with SQL Server Express, there is a notable lack of managed backup tools that enable sites to manage RPO and RTO. A bit rough around the edges (Ed: that’s enough about Peter!) this solution gives you a lot of that control back; and makes it visible from the application to the users. Backups can be scheduled and/or on-demand. As ever, sample code will be available to attendees afterwards, and you can cut your own solutions to suit your cloth. Peter uses it in house to do high frequency backups to the cloud in order to sleep at night after rebuilding the long-lost Microsoft Money to manage the family finances. No bank accounts were harmed in the building of this solution Slides and video here.

Is Blazor a tool suitable for use by Access developers?

    November 22, 2022 @ 4:30 - 6:00 Online Talk and Chat

Most Access developers avoid web development because of the need to learn JavaScript/J Query.   Using the MS ASP framework also required C# as there are few coding examples in VB.Net and anyway VB.Net is not much like VBA. In 2020 MS announced a new framework called Blazor, that removed the need for JavaScript.   Does this simplify web development enough to make it feasible for Access developers?   Is Blazor a complete solution or do you still need other components? John will talk about what he had to learn in order to deliver a customer facing web-based interface to an application already running in Access / SQL. Slides and video are here. In July 2023 John adds: Blazor continues to evolve during 2023 and .Net 8 promises some new features that have got developers excited.  The Microsoft page ASP.NET Core updates in .NET 8 Preview 6 has the full list but is a bit ‘dry’. There is a more enthusiastic version at The Future of ASP.NET Core: .NET 8 Feature Preview.
